September Tidings 2014

Musings from Pastor Kevin

Have you ever lost hope?  Feeling hopeless is one of the most emotionally debilitating conditions people experience.  But hopelessness is also one of the most avoidable conditions, and one you can realize when you understand what genuine hope is – and place your hope in God alone.  (If I was preaching – I would probably be asking for an “Amen” at this moment…..)

Too many people confuse hope with one of several poor imitations, such as the kind of “hope” that is little more than wishful thinking or the kind that depends entirely on a specific outcome.  By contrast, authentic hope is the confidence that no matter what the outcome, God will see you through all of life’s challenges and difficulties.  That’s not wishful thinking:  that’s a certainty.  Hope is God’s great promise to us.

Think of it this way:  You have everything to gain by holding on to the hope that in God’s hands everything will one day make sense, and that you will endure to the end.  That requires a shift from insisting upon a particular way you think things should go to deciding that no matter how things go, God will be your constant companion and source of comfort.

Placing your hope in God alone offers you the assurance that regardless of the circumstances you can always be at peace, because He will always be with you…..Here are some scriptures that I would like to share with you that will help you to realize the great HOPE we have in Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39 “Nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Psalm 103 celebrates God’s compassion and ability to forgive.  “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love…He does not treat us as our sins deserve…”  Matthew 6:25-34 encourages us NOT to worry, because our God knows what we need.  And how can I forget Philippians 4:13 that says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

We are people of the Word and we can always turn to the scriptures to remind us of the great hope that we have in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

God bless you for your journey,

             Rev. Kev.

September Manna

Manna on Main Street for September is being organized by Sandy Elliot. The menu for this free meal will feature porcupine balls, mac and cheese, a vegetable and cake. Sandy will need volunteers to serve and clean up. There are sign-up sheets in the Round Room.

Manna on Monday will be headed up by Valerie Locker. She will be preparing meatloaf, potatoes, veggies and cake. Please let Valerie know if you can help out because she will also need volunteers to give a hand with this meal.

Rev. Kev. and Valerie recently went to a meeting of people who are interested in a Weekend Backpack Ministry (which offers meals for elementary children of the Spring Cove Schools).  The program has been successful in the Martinsburg school and the person in charge has resigned recently.  So, there needs to be people stepping forward in Martinsburg to continue that program – but there is a strong interest in establishing something for the school here in Roaring Spring.  We were surprised to find out that 40% of the children who attend school in Roaring Spring are eligible for free or reduced lunch – and so we realize that the needs are great.  The Locker’s will not be able to participate in the next meeting and we would like to encourage others from the congregation who would like to step forward in some kind of leadership role in getting this program restarted and expanded.  There will be a meeting at the Administrative Office here in Roaring Spring at 4 PM on Thursday, September 4th.  There are several people who have said that they would be willing to help in any way but we need your help in getting this started again.

The Committee on Lay Leadership (formerly known as the Nominating Committee) will be meeting on Monday, September 15th at 7 PM in the Pastor’s Office.  We will be accessing the needs of Leadership within the congregation. So if there is a particular area of ministry that you would like to volunteer for or if there is a particular committee that you are on and you would like someone to take over that responsibility from you – please inform Rev. Kevin, JoEllen Mingle, Sally Weicht, Jerry Green, Jeanne Detwiler, Heidi Hoffner or Nancy Hamil by September 15th.  That would be greatly appreciated.

EPIC begins again on September 10th at 5 PM

EPIC (Everything’s Possible In Christ) will begin again this year on Wednesday, September 10th at 5 PM.  We have 5 faithful volunteers who volunteer on a regular basis. They get tired (and yes, some burn out) and we are looking for 5 additional volunteers who would step forward to help teach or assist with our EPIC program.  Over ½ of the children that come out to EPIC are un-churched and I hope that we see this as a tremendous opportunity to share God’s love with them.  So, we need your help!  We need you!  If we have 5 people step forward – you only have to teach 4 lessons during this next year and if we had 10 people we would only have to teach 2 lessons.

The children of our community are looking to us to share God’s love with them.  If you do not feel gifted to teach and would like to be an assistant in the class room we could use your help as well.  We have sign-up sheets in the Round Room of the Church and we would encourage you to step forward.

We are happy to announce that the Youth will also be returning to Wednesday nights because Wednesday seems to be a night when most of the Youth are available to meet.  Justin Williams is anxious about starting and he also would like volunteers to step forward and help guide our Youth in the ways in which God is working in their lives.

So, won’t you consider stepping forward?  You are blessed so that you can be a blessing to someone else.

SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM-served 4,129 lunches

“WOW!”  This is the 7th year that we have participated in the Summer Lunch Program and what a blessing it is for the Church and the Community of Roaring Spring.  We are the Church that feeds people and boy, we do great work!  Rev. Kev. has heard from several parents, grandparents and children who wish to thank us for this ongoing ministry.  Valerie, Jerry and Fred stepped forward in leadership roles this year and they did an AWESOME JOB!  We wouldn’t be able to function were it not for the people who volunteered this summer and we even asked the youth of our Church to participate (and they did a simply wonderful job!).  Thank you for your support of this vital ministry of our Church.

STARTING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21st with a 1 hour Orientation meeting and the class officially starts on September 28th.  It’s not too late to sign up – you can sign up no later than September 17th by contacting the Church office.

April and Rev. Kev will be leading the 8 session class which will meet once a month for 8 months (and each class will be 3 hours in length).  The class is designed to raise up leaders within the Church to assist us in navigating through enormous structural changes in our communities.  Rev. Kev. encourages the leadership within the Church to participate in this class.

Participants will read 4 books that will assist us in meeting the ongoing changes that our society is making.  The books are “Direct Hit” by Paul Borden, “Simple Church” by Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger, “The Externally Focused Church” by Rich Rusaw and Eric Swanson and “The Healthy Small Church” by Dennis Bickers.

We look forward to this class and we are encouraging as many people from the Church to step forward in mission and ministry.  See you there!

Marianna’s Fundraiser

Orders are being taken for Marianna Hoagies and Pizzas until September 21st. The orders will be delivered to the church on October 2nd. Pick-up time will be announced at a later date. Proceeds from the sale will go towards a new water softener for the church.

Prayer Chain

Are you willing to pray for the people in our congregation and our community? If you would like to be added to our prayer chain list please let Sally Weicht know or the church office.

Have you thought about becoming a member of Trinity United Methodist Church? If you have, we are planning to receive new members soon. Please contact Rev. Kevin Locker or the church office if you are interested.

      SEPTEMBER 20th from 4:30-7:30

We have 2 young people from our congregation who participate in the Mock Trial Team with the Spring Cove School District (Jacob Muthler and Hailey Ritchey) and they will be having a Spaghetti Dinner at Trinity Church. The dinner is to help them with their fundraising efforts so that the team can compete in San Francisco this upcoming year.  The meal costs $7 and tickets can be purchased in advance through the Muthler or Ritchey families.

The Administrative Council works to plan and implement a program of nurture, outreach, witness and resources to support the mission and ministry of the church.  Council is currently focusing on our ministry and outreach to children and youth.

•          Tot Spot has provided a welcoming environment for preschool children for more than 30 years.  During this last year of Tot Spot operation we want to support enrollment and operations of the program and to celebrate the contribution it has made to the young children of our community.

•          EPIC is reaching an increasing number of children new to our church family.  We want to find ways to support and grow this outreach.

•          We want to prayerfully discern the unmet needs of children in our community, and determine how we might work effectively to meet some of those needs.

We ask for your prayers and your help as we seek to serve God's youngest sheep.
