10 October Tidings 2016

Trinity Tidings

Roaring Spring, PA 16673                                                     October 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We usually ask the children every Sunday morning (during our conversation with the Young at Heart) who are you?  And they know what the answer is “Special Gifts of God” because we shared with them many months ago that each one of us is very special to God – we are all special in His eyes – because God has formed us and we were created in the image of God.  Do you realize just how special you are to God?  God needs you!  God needs every single member of the Body of Christ to be right where He places us on this planet.  We each have a specific ministry, a vitally important work to do:  in our homes, community, and in our Church.

From time to time someone will come up to me and say “Pastor, I messed up big time.  I have sinned and I don’t think that God will ever be able to forgive me.”  When I hear these words it saddens me.  Those words break my heart.  And I know they break God’s heart as well.  If you are feeling insignificant, your feelings are being influence by something or someone in the world – probably the devil – because in the eyes of God there is no such thing as an insignificant human being.  To Him, each one of us is special, each one of us is unique and God has gifted each one of us with a special gift to be used to God’s great glory.  In God’s heart and mind, you were created for a purpose.

The Bible teaches us that every single one of us is worth so much to God that He sent His best gift to secure our salvation, and that we were made a joint heir with Jesus Christ.  It says God considered our calling to be so significant that He planned and ordained it before the foundation of the world.  Do you realize that you have a divine calling?  This is not something that is reserved for pastors and missionaries alone.  May I remind you today of the promise that is found in Ephesians 4:4-7, 11-13), which says (In the Message Bible):  You were all called on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly.  You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all.  Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.  But that doesn’t mean you should all look and speak and act the same.  God handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with His gifts, filled earth with His gifts.  He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor to train Christians in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the Church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully alive like Christ…

According to these verses – each of us is called to do the work of ministry.  Each one of us have been graced by God to help build up the Body of Christ and share the love of Jesus Christ, in and through our very lives.  Whatever our natural vocation may be, we are called to grow up to be like our Lord – to think like Him, talk like Him and act like Him, and if we do that, we can then come back to give God the glory, honor and praise.  I leave you with one last promise from John 14:12:  Jesus says: “The person who trusts Me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things.”

You are significant!  You are a Special Gift of God!  You are precious in His sight!

Blessings for the journey,

Rev. Kevin

Living God, You invite us to talk with You in prayer but instead we talk at You.  You invite us to seek Your will but we attempt rather to impose our own. You tell us that You know all our needs, yet we present You with a list of demands and requests.  Forgive us, Loving God, the way we misunderstand and abuse prayer.  Teach us not only to speak but also to listen, not just to seek but also to find, not simply to bring our requests but also to respond to Your call.  Remind us that there is a time for words and a time to keep silent, and help us make room for both.  We ask it in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Trinity Church has been supporting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital since the inception of Tot Spot and the Church decided that it would like to continue giving to St. Jude’s.  We are happy to announce that we received $625 from the Bike-a-Thon that was held at the Rails to Trails starting in Williamsburg.  We had 16 riders who participated.  14 of the riders completed 13.5 miles and 2 riders traveled 6.25 miles.  A great time was had by all and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.

The Lunch Program had a very successful experience this summer as we served 5,347 meals (which is approximately 500 more meals than we served last year).  Rev. Locker contacted the Susquehanna Conference Media Communication Office and he was asked to submit an article about our Summer Lunch Program.  Well, we received copies of the Link (which is the Conference Newsletter and there is a full page article there applauding the efforts of Trinity United Methodist Church).  The Church also received a letter from Bishop Jeremiah Park complimenting the Church on this very successful Mission project.  So, I hope that you are just as proud as the Pastor is to realize that it involves many people within the Church pulling together to accomplish a great outreach into the Community.  God is Good!!!!!  Way to go Trinity Church!

Rev. Kevin will be using a DVD format for the Bible Study that we will do in the fall.  We will be using the material called “That the World May Know” which is material that actually takes you to the Holy Land to experience first-hand what the Bible passage is all about.  Ray Vander Laan is a Bible Scholar who has developed this material and the first series will focus on the “Promised Land” and there are 5 sessions for the first video series.  Then the Pastor will then lead a study on the Birth of Jesus (using the same DVD material) for an Advent Study.  We will be meeting on Monday evenings at 7 PM (and depending on the size of the group – we will either meet in the Parsonage or in the Pastor’s Office.  Please let the Pastor know if you are interested in attending the Study.

Trinity Church will be celebrating mission and ministry throughout the whole month of October (celebrating the fact that Fred Hetrick taught Sunday School for 40+ years, Ralph Grove has been an organist for 40+ years, Doug Mingle has been our Choir Director for 30+ years, Nancy Hamil has been the pianist for our choir for 30+ years and Rev. Kevin has been serving in Ministry for 30+ years. So, we have decided to focus our celebration to Christian Education, Music and Preaching. And we have developed the following focus for October:

October 16 - We will focus on Favorite Bible Passages or Biblical Figures in the Bible.

October 23 - We will have Music Sunday

Trinity Church packing Backpacks

on Wednesday, October 26th

at Through Inc.

We are looking for volunteers to help pack Dragonpacks (a weekend supply of food for Children in the Spring Cove School District).  We are packing over 200 meals – so we need your help.  This is such a great outreach into our community and we praise God for the tremendous support it has received from the Community!

We are in need of some people to volunteer in the Nursery so that parents with you children can come to worship.  The number of volunteers has gone way down for this and we need your help.  If we have enough volunteers – you would only have to do this 1 Sunday every other month.  So please prayerfully consider giving a parent time to refresh and renew themselves in worship.  Please contact Julia Williams if you would like to volunteer.

Up-coming Manna Meals

Sandy Elliott and Gary Polchito will be leading the Manna on Main Street meal on October 8th. They will be preparing spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. CHARGE CONFERENCE – October 29th – Faith UMC in Woodbury

Trinity United Methodist Church will once again be having their Charge Conference as a Cluster Event and we will be having our Charge Conference from 9-9:45 AM at Faith United Methodist Church in Woodbury.  We will then join the Northern Bedford Cluster Churches in a Worship Service at 9:45 AM.  **If you are a member of the Administrative Board you should attend this meeting.  We will also be voting to either accept or reject the Simple Structure Concept that we have been discussing for a few months now.

Chef Jere’ is preparing to get all of those magnificent sauces ready for the Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday, October 20th where all of the proceeds from the Dinner will be going to support the Angel Tree Ministry (providing Christmas gifts for children in our communities).  There will not be tickets sold – we are asking people to be giving a free-will offering.  The men of the church are encouraged to assist Jere’ with the dinner – please contact Jere’ to see what help might be needed.
