May Tidings 2014

Musings from Pastor Kevin

Valerie and I had the pleasure of seeing the new movie “God’s Not Dead”.  This is a great movie and story.  It was very well done and is worth going to see.  Consider that a nudge or a recommendation if you need it.

The storyline is of a college student who is challenged by a professor to prove that God exists.  On their first day of class the professor says we can move ahead in our study if you would all just sign a statement stating the fact that “God is Dead.”  There was one young man who said that he would not make such a statement and so the professor encourages him to prove to the class that God exists.  I have said many times over the years that we need to know what we believe about our faith.  That does not mean that we have to become a scholar or be able to quote scripture right off the top of our hearts.  It does mean that we should be able to give a reason for following Jesus and believing in our Resurrected Lord.

It says in 1 Peter 3:15 “Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy and give an account for the hope that is in you.”

God changed my life and He continues to change my life, my family and those I get to share life with.  I love to share with others how we can help others grow in their faith and share from the heart – what Jesus Christ has done in my life.  The life of a disciple of Jesus Christ should be spoken with excitement and joy that brings more passion and joy.  In other words, when people see our lives shine for Jesus, they are going to want the same for their lives.

Every day we have opportunities to make a HUGE difference in the lives other others:  opportunities to let God speak to our heart, opportunities to allow God to work through our lives, opportunities to serve others in Jesus’ name, and opportunities to share our faith with anyone we can.

In the movie, “God’s Not Dead” this one college freshman had an impact on many lives, some directly and some indirectly.  I don’t want to give away the whole story (but he made a significant difference in the professor’s life as well).  The same is true for us. There are people who come across our path and even sit across the table with us that we can influence by letting our faith shine.  Yet throughout the day there are people who watch us that we are influencing too.  We may never know some of them, but the influence is still very real.

I pray that our lives make a bigger difference than we have ever thought possible.  But that can only happen when we choose God above all else.  The prayer of my own heart is that I can be a rich blessing upon the people that God puts in my life.  The fact that God is with us and will speak through us makes it so much easier to stand up and speak, but it may be helpful to realize that you don’t have to preach from a pulpit or teach from a lectern to share what you believe about Jesus.  The best lessons we teach are taught through conversations we have with others.  Our lives are a living testimony that God’s not dead as we live for Him.

It is my hope that you go and see the movie “God’s Not Dead” and look for opportunities today to share your faith…

Pastor Kevin

Men’s Fellowship to Meet May 13th

United Methodist Men’s Fellowship meets for a meal at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. I asked Jerry for a menu and his response was “that’s over two weeks away, good luck!” That being said I’m sure whatever Jerry and Fred decide to cook it will be extremely tasty!  Please join other men from the church family at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 13th, for a meal and fellowship.

Yummy Manna Meals for May

Manna on Main Street for May is being organized by Jamie Ebersole and is scheduled for Saturday May 10th from 5-6:30 pm. The menu for this free meal will feature breaded baked chicken, scalloped potatoes, salad, a vegetable and dessert. Now doesn’t that sound delicious! Jamie needs 2 gallons of milk, a 2lb bag of shredded cheddar cheese and 10 cakes baked for this meal. Volunteers are also needed to help prepare, serve and clean up. There are sign-up sheets in the Round Room.

Our Manna on Monday meal is being coordinated by Valerie Locker and due to Memorial Day will take place a week earlier this month. The date will be May 19th and the meal will be served from 11:30am to 1pm. Valerie is planning to serve pizza casserole, salad, Italian bread and dessert. The entire community is welcome to come and enjoy these free meals so spread the word!

Birthing Kits

The HUB as been asked to make birthing kits that will be delivered at Annual Conference. Trinity’s Women’s Fellowship will prepare the kits but is asking the church members for monetary donations to help purchase the necessary materials. If you would like to make a donation please give it to Ruth Adams or Valerie Locker, or you can put it in the regular offering and indicate that it is for the birthing kits. All donations need to be collected by May 11th. Thank you for your help!

Food Pantry

Non-perishable food items requested by the Roaring Spring Food Pantry for the month of May are cereal, canned fruit, pasta (preferably something besides spaghetti), rice and spaghetti sauce.

The food pantry, located in the annex building of St. Luke Lutheran Church, is open from 1 to 3 p.m. each Thursday and also from 5 to 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. The pantry served 47 families in the month of April.

Financially Speaking…

Fred Hetrick, the Finance Chair and Ralph Grove, the Financial Secretary have reported that our income for the month of March was $46,229.41 and our expenses were $29,734.86 that leaves a balance of $16,494.55.

Mothers Caring for Mothers Banquet

This year the women’s banquet will be a little different than past ones. There will be a light meal served but instead of having entertainment provided for them the women will gather to help assemble the birthing kits that Pastor Kevin will then take to annual conference. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and help with a ministry that will provide much needed aid to expecting mothers in other parts of the world.  The banquet will be on Thursday,  May 15th at 6pm.

Mission Central HUB

The Altoona District HUB is looking for the following items to be

donated: notepads, pencil sharpeners, band aids, soap, toothbrushes, hand towels, wash clothes, and sweaters. If you’re able to make a donation please place it in the Round Room.

Graduate Recognition and Breakfast

Please notify the Church Office or Fred

Hetrick of any seniors graduating from

either high school or college this spring. Graduates and their families will be invited for breakfast and will be recognized during our

Sunday worship service. The breakfast will be on June 15th at 8:15am.

Acolyte Coordinator

We are looking for someone to step into the role of Acolyte Coordinator. This would entail making sure there is someone signed up to be the acolyte each

Sunday as well as recruiting and training new people as necessary. We need to fill this position as soon as possible so if you’re interested please speak with Rev. Kevin or contact the church office.

Special Music

If you’re interested in blessing our church congregation with your musical talents we are looking for special music to be offered during our

worship service on May 25th.  Please talk to Rev. Kevin if this is something that you would like to provide in the absence of the choir.

Summer Lunch Training

There will be training for everyone involved with the summer lunch program on May 21st at 6:30pm here at Trinity. Valerie Locker, Jerry Green and Fred Hetrick are requesting that all volunteers and cooks who will be taking part in the program this summer plan to attend.

Trinity Church will again be hosting VBS starting June 22nd and ending June 26th.  It will be for ages 3 through the completion of 8th grade. Like last year there will be a meal served at 5pm and then the program will begin at 5:35pm. More information along with registration forms will be available mid May. Those who register

before June 16 will receive a free t-shirt.

 Drawings of Trinity Church

We are fortunate to have available some copies of Carolyn Gartland’s pencil sketch of Trinity Church; they can be purchased for $20. If you’re interested in one please talk to Rev. Kevin or contact the Church office.

Spring Fling Vendor Fair

Friends of the Roaring Spring Community Library will be hosting a

vendor fair on Saturday May 17th in the fellowship hall here at Trinity Church.   It will take place from 11am-2pm. In addition to over twenty vendors there will be food as well as crafts for the kids. Please come out and support our public library.

Prayer for May

Sovereign God, we thank You that Easter is NOT about events long ago but about now; not just about others, but about us; not just about certain aspects of life but about life itself!  We thank You for the truths of Easter we can continue to celebrate today:  the victory of good over evil, love over hate, and life over death; the turning of weakness into strength, fear into courage, and doubt into faith; a new beginning where it had seemed like the end, hope where there had been despair; and confidence where there had been confusion.  Help us to live each day in the light of Easter, with its joy bubbling up in our hearts, its laughter shining from our eyes, and its message always on our lips.  So may others, seeing the difference it has made to us, discover the difference it can make for them, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
