12 December Tidings 2016

Trinity Tidings

Roaring Spring, PA 16673                                                     December 2016

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Did you know that in the Bible there are several occasions where God changed a person’s name to more accurately reflect the purpose and call of God in that person’s life?

In the Old Testament there are many examples of this.  Abram’s name was changed to Abraham because God was going to make Abraham the father of many nations (Genesis 17:5).  Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah because God was going to enable her to have children in her old age (Genesis 17:15-16).  Jacob’s name was changed to Israel because he struggled with God and received God’s blessing (Genesis 32:28).  In the New Testament, two examples stand out.  Simon’s name was changed to Peter because his confession would become the bedrock profession of the Church.  Saul’s name was changed to Paul following his Damascus Road encounter where he became a missionary in the early church instead of a persecutor of Christianity.

As we wait and prepare ourselves through this season of Advent and wait patiently for Christmas – where we will celebrate the birth of Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, we are reminded how an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that Mary would give birth to a Son who was conceived in her from the Holy Spirit.  The angel instructed Joseph, “and you are to give Him the name, Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.”

It was the prophet Isaiah who spoke of the birth of God’s Son with these words:  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given:  and the government shall be upon His shoulder:  and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

Do you realize the significance of these names?  Because Jesus is WONDERFUL, life does not have to be dull.  Because He is COUNSELOR, we can make confidant decisions because of His guidance and wisdom.  Because He is our MIGHTY GOD, no demand in life is too big for Him to handle.  Because He is the EVERLASTING FATHER, we have the guarantee that we will be able to spend all eternity with Him forever and ever.  Because He is our PRINCE OF PEACE, we can realize an inner calm that no matter what storms may come into our lives that peace can dwell in our hearts.

All of these attributes of Jesus tell us who He is and what God has sent Him to do.  And so as we come closer to the birth of Jesus, I hope that you will discover for yourselves the true blessings of His name and experience His presence and power in your life.  It is my hope and prayer that you will have a wonder-filled Christmas!

May I leave you with a Christmas blessing:  May you be filled with the wonder of Mary, the obedience of Joseph, the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the determination of the magi, and the peace of the Christ Child.  God bless you now and forever and ever.  Amen!

Blessings for the journey,

Rev. Kevin

OUR JOYS AND CONCERNS:    Doris Ferry, Pastor Bob VanNatta and family, Jane Elliott, Marg Bradley, Billy White (Boot camp), Needa Shaw, Doris Wertman (Alta Wineland’s sister at UPMC Altoona), Roberta Winters.

Living God, we come today to remember with gratitude the birth of Your Son.  We remember how prophets foretold His coming, and how those words were wonderfully fulfilled in Bethlehem.  We remember how You needed Mary to bring Him into the world, and how she willingly allowed You to work through her life.  We remember how shepherds heard the Good News, and how, having seen the truth of it for themselves, they went on their way rejoicing.  We remember how Simeon held You in his arms, and with praise in His heart gave thanks to You.  We remember how generations since have seen Your face revealed in Christ, and through Him heard You speaking to their hearts (to acknowledge the sin in your life – to ask for forgiveness for that sin – and ask Christ to come into your heart and dwell in your life forever and ever).  We remember the past so that we might discover You in the present, and find faith for the future.  Be born in our hearts today that we may be born again to eternal life.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Up-coming Manna Meals:

       January 14th – Pork-n-Sauer Kraut

       January 23rd – Beef Stew

*We wish to thank everyone who participated in making our Thanksgiving Dinner a blessing for everyone who took part.  We had great helpers who gathered together to make the stuffing balls and pumpkin pies.  We had carvers come in to carve the turkeys.  Appvion donated turkeys, Hoss’s donated mashed potatoes, and Sheetz’s donated coffee and creamers.  We thank the people that came to serve and the people from the community who came out to help clean-up.  We are blessed to be a blessing to the Community around us.

*We had a very enriching Christmas preparation as we prepared the Sanctuary for Advent.  We wish to thank everyone who participated in the service in any way.  The readers did an amazing job.  The music was awesome.  Ralph played a fantastic “Emmanuel”…and we all learned about the various traditions of the Church.

LIVE NATIVITY – We need you!

We decided to add another night to our Live Nativity where we will once more depict the Nativity on Spang Street on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Night – December 9, 10 and 11 from 6-8 PM.  We are going to invite the people who come for our Manna Meal on December 10th to then make their way to the Live Nativity and then come into the Round Room for Cookies, Hot Chocolate and Hot Tea.  We are asking for donations of cookies for those 3 nights – so your generosity would be appreciated.  We also need volunteers to sign up for 30 minute intervals…. we need shepherds, wise folks, Mary, Joseph, and angels.  We are still holding out hope for the possibility of a live animal (so if anyone knows of one we might be able to borrow can they please let Rev. Kevin know).

**Would you like to display your favorite Nativity Set to be displayed in the Round Room on December 9-11?  We would like for people to bring theirs in and set them up on the tables in the Round Room – so that they will be displayed for the Live Nativity outside.  You are also encouraged to write a note that you can display with your nativity about what is meaningful about your particular set – whether it was passed down, a special present, or the history of why it is meaningful to you.

ANGEL TREE DISTRIBUTION – We have 134 Angel Gifts that people from the Roaring Spring and surrounding communities will be collecting.  If you haven’t picked up your angel – they are available at the Roaring Spring Department store on the Christmas Tree.  The gifts need to be purchased and returned to the Department Store or the Church Office by December 9th.  The Angel Tree Committee will then sort out what gifts were purchased and may have to supplement some of the gifts.  We thank the Men’s and Women’s Fellowship Groups for the special fund raiser for the Angel Tree Ministry.  This is such a vital ministry to the Community – the gifts will be distributed on Thursday, December 15th from 6-8 PM.  Thank you for your participation in this program that has been a part of the Mission and Ministry of Trinity Church.

DECEMBER 7th - The children and youth from our EPIC Program have 2 traditions that will continue again this year.  They will be going Christmas Caroling at the Greystone on Wednesday, December 7th.  They will be meeting at the Church and have dinner at 5 PM and then we will head off to the Greystone around 6 PM.  We will sing in several of the halls from 6-6:45 PM and then we will have cookies and hot chocolate with the residents at 6:45.  The parents can then pick the children up at the Greystone (front building).

DECEMBER 14th – Jesus’ Birthday Party.  People may come and join us for dinner at 5 PM and then we will be having Jesus’ Birthday Party Celebration in the sanctuary (where we will think about the significance of Jesus’ Birthday – and they will reenact the Christmas Story and see how important each person is vital to sharing the message of Jesus’ birth…..).  Everyone is then invited to come and join us for cake and ice cream in the Fellowship Hall.

PLEASE COME AND CELEBRATE WITH THE EPIC CHILDREN – they are just an awesome group of young people who come out to learn and grow in their life of faith each week.  We have a steady average of 25-30 people each week.

Rev. Kevin will be starting a Confirmation Class at the end of January or the beginning of February.  If you have a young person who would like to join the Church and is at least 12 years old – please let the Pastor know of their interest.  Would you also share what is the best meeting time for the young people (Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon).  This will be a 10-12 week class.

presented from children and youth Sunday School Classes.  The children and youth of the Sunday morning Sunday School are preparing a Christmas play to be presented during the morning worship service on Sunday, December 18th at 9:30 AM.   The children and youth will then invite the Church family to participate in a Fellowship Hour in the Youth Sunday School classroom where cookies and refreshments will be served.  Everyone is invited to attend.

We will have pre-service Music and readings from 6:30-7 PM on Christmas Eve.  If you would like to participate with some kind of sharing please let the Pastor know of your interest.

We will then have a Candlelight Communion Service which will begin at 7 PM.

CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE – 9:30 AM  We will have a

relaxed Christmas Day Service.  The children may come in their pajamas as a part of the service and we will have a “Blessing of the Toys” (where each child is encouraged to bring 1 toy that they would like to have blessed this year).  Come and enjoy the joy of Christ’s birthday.

ROOF FUND UPDATE - we are happy to announce that we owe a little over $40,000 on the Roof Fund (which is such a blessing because we have paid $25,000 toward the retirement of that debt in 1 year).  Isn’t that awesome?  So we will once again be receiving a Christmas Offering for the Roof Fund again this year.  You may bring your Christmas Gift in and place it in the offering during the next few weeks of Advent or you may wish to share it as an offering to the Christ Child on Christmas Eve.  We are encouraging people to place “ROOF FUND’ on the Memo line of the Check or place your donation in an envelope and mark on it “FOR ROOF FUND”.  All of the gifts that we receive will be sent off in our next monthly payment.  We praise God for your generosity!

FINANCIAL NEWS - We are also happy to announce that we will be paying off our Shares of Ministry early because you have been generous.  We realize the needs of the Mission and Ministry of the Church and you have been faithful.
October Income: $12,769.00

           Expenses: $11,928.00

We are mailing out many newsletters each month and we would like to let everyone know that our Church Newsletters are available to view online at the church website  If you would like to access the newsletter online and would prefer not to receive the newsletter – please fill out the post card (add your name somewhere on the card) that is provided and send it back to the Church office or drop it into the offering plate.  We are all in favor of saving trees and saving postage costs….

Let’s not forget about our servicemen and women who will be away from their families this Holiday Season. A simple Christmas card or a letter could really brighten their spirits.
