June - August Tidings 2017

Trinity Tidings

Roaring Spring, PA 16673                                                     June-August 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I would like to start by sharing with you a reading from the Message Bible:  Galatians 6:2-3  “You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out.  Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed.  Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law.  If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.”

When we go through major disappointments in life, our natural reaction is to pull back and isolate ourselves. We want to handle it ourselves.  We want to be self-sufficient. We want to keep our losses and failures and mistakes and crises a secret.  We want to withdraw from others.  This is a terrible idea!

When we go through disappointment or crisis or loss, that’s when we need our friends the most.  That’s when we need brothers and sisters to come and share life (and Jesus) with us.  We need to accept help from others.  God doesn’t intend for us to handle all the pain and stress in our lives by ourselves.  We need each other.  We need to be there for each other.  We are social beings.  The first thing God said in the Garden of Eden is “it’s not good for man to be alone.”  We were made to be in relationship with one another.

Job 6:14 says, “when desperate people give up on God Almighty, their friends, at least, should stick with them” (The Message Bible).

Brothers and sisters in Christ – there are times in our lives when we may be in so much pain that we say, “I don’t even believe in God right now!”  And it is at that very moment that we need to have friends who will come and stand alongside us and say “I am here for you.  We’ll believe God for you right now.”  And there may come a time when you will say, “I don’t have any faith right now.  I’m full of doubt and fear.”  That’s when you need brothers and sisters to step in and say, “that’s okay. We will have faith for you.  We will trust God for you in this.”

As it says in Galatians 6:2, when we carry each other’s burdens – we will fulfill the law of Christ.  You might be wondering – what is the law of Christ?  Here it is - love your neighbor as yourself.  The Bible teaches us the blessings of helping each other.  Every time we help somebody who’s going through pain, we are fulfilling the law of Christ.  Trying to handle our trouble all by ourselves will only make us more tired and more stressed out.  We need to accept the help of others and let our friends carry us when we don’t have the energy to go through it ourselves.  It is during this time when we realize that God is with us.  He is at work in our circumstances, even if we can’t see Him working at this point.

And so, I praise God for sisters and brothers in Christ who come to surround those who are hurting – because we are able to see the love of Jesus through them.  And I praise God for the love that Jesus has shared with me through the family of God.

Blessings,

Rev. Kevin

PRAYER FOR JUNE, JULY and AUGUST

Loving God, hear our prayer for the have-nots of this world:  those who have no homes, living as refugees or rough on our streets; those who have no food, their crops having failed, their economies burdened by debt, or their labors not fairly rewarded; those who have no fresh water, daily facing the threat of disease and the nightmare of drought; those who have insufficient resources to help themselves, condemned to a life of poverty with no prospect of respite; those who have no access to education, a health service or welfare system; no one to turn to for help or support.

Loving God, stir the hearts of all to work for a fairer world and a more just society.  Challenge us who have plenty to respond to those who have little, so that we all may share in the riches of Your creation and be able to celebrate the gift of life that You bring for us all.  In Jesus’ name, we ask it.  Amen.

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

We would like to ask you to pray for our Summer Lunch Program that it might continue to reach more children of our Community.  We were able to celebrate the fact that we fed over 5,000 meals this past Summer (which averages out to 117 meals a day).  There is a lot of work that is involved in making sure that it runs smoothly and we wouldn’t be able to do it were it not for the many people who cook, volunteer in any way, and help to clean up.  Whenever we needed cookies or cakes to be made – people stepped forward.  If there were some empty spots on our volunteer list – people stepped forward.  If there was a need – you were there.  Trinity Church has a blessing to touch the lives of children and youth of our surrounding communities and we realize the way that God continues to bless us as we continue to answer His call upon our hearts.  We know that we have also received blessings as people share from their gardens as well.  There is one man in the community who shared with the Pastor that God laid upon his heart the need to plant even more vegetables this year to help feed the children.  What a mighty God we serve!

OUTDOOR WORSHIP

AND

PICNIC AT SHAWNEE PARK

We will be worshipping at Shawnee Park (here in Roaring Spring) on Sunday, June 18th at 10:30 AM and then we will have a Picnic at 11:45 AM.  You are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, a covered dish to pass, and any outdoor lawn game that you might have.  We know that this is Father’s Day – and this would be a great opportunity to join with celebrating in this special way.  Please come and join us for worship and picnic.  The Church will provide the meat, drinks and paper products.

The Family Fellowship has planned to go to Greene Hills Camp once again this year on Sunday, August 6th.  We will be able to swim in the pool at Greene Hills from 2-5 PM and then we will be having a Picnic down at the Pavilion starting at 5:30 PM. Please bring your bathing suit, lawn chair and a covered dish to share.  The Church will provide hot dogs and drinks.

Community Picnic – August 19th from 2-5 PM

There will be a Community Picnic again this year in Roaring Spring on Saturday, August 19th.  This was a huge success last year.  Trinity UM Church will be handing something out on that day (if you would like to help out in any way please contact Rev. Kevin or Valerie).

SPRING DAM WEEKEND – July 21-23

We will be celebrating the Spring Dam Weekend again this year from the 21st and 23rd of July.  The Lion’s Club will be hosting the Pancake Breakfast from 6-9 AM and the Spring Dam Worship Service starting at 9:15 AM.  Please plan to join us as we Worship together as a Community of faith.

LECTOR and GREETER Coordinator needed – we are in need of someone to set up a schedule for Lector’s and Greeter’s for each month.  Since Louise Drake is moving – we will need to get someone to replace her.  Louise does have a list of Greeters and Lectors that she has used but you may have other ideas about how to coordinate these.  Please contact Rev. Kevin soon if you are interested in this vital ministry.

FINANCIAL NEWS

We are current with all of our bills that fund mission and ministry of the Church.  We have paid our “Shares of Ministry” through June.  Our balance on the Roof is $30,874 (wow – isn’t that a blessing?) – we have been able to pay off $34,000 in debt in a little over a year and a half.  Thank you so much for your generous contributions for the Roof!  It is greatly appreciated.  People can make donations toward the Roof or the Heat Pump by making some kind of notification of which project that you would like to support.  We also would like to thank you for your continued financial support throughout the summer months.  God has blessed us in so many ways!!!

TRUSTEES –  The Trustees are happy to announce that the Heat Pump has been installed at the Parsonage. The project did cost $20,000 and we have received some generous contributions toward this expense.  If anyone would like to make a donation toward this project please mark the envelope or mark in the memo line of the check – HEAT PUMP SYSTEM.  The Trustee’s have also asked Knisely and Sons to give us quotes for air-conditioning the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall.  The painting in the sanctuary ceiling has been completed.  We had a good turnout for our spring clean-up.  We are looking into redoing sanctuary doors and railings.  The stained-glass windows are in need of repair.
